Bacteriophages are the deadliest entities on earth with up to 40% of ocean bacteria killed by them every single day. These highly specialized microorganisms choose one specific bacteria and some of its very close relatives to target then use their unique structure to hijack cells with their own genetic material. Structurally they almost look made up: Their head is an icosahedron (20 faces 30 edges) that contains the genetic material of the virus and often sits on a long tail that has leg-like fibers.
Bacteriophages are under the microscope recently as a potential weapon against bacteria in response to the rise of the "superbug." Because they are so highly specialized and do not affect human cells they could potentially work against multi-drug resistant strains of many bacteria.
